If the field becomes contaminated, discard and obtain new materials. Maintain sterile field by allowing only sterile items in contact with the sterile drape. Apply sterile gloves and rearrange items on sterile field as necessary. If sterile solution is used, pour according to Skill 31-3 (Berman and Snyder). Place bulky items (sterile basins, etc.) near the 2.5 cm (1 in) border, holding one edge of the item in its sterile wrapping. DO NOT use items that touch the 2.5 cm (1 in) border of the sterile drape. Small lightweight items are dropped near the center of the sterile field. Hold the items/5 cm or 6 in above the field. Place sterile items on sterile drape as follows: a. Open sterile items needed for the procedure. Do not lean over or reach over the sterile drape while positioning it or placing sterile items onto the drape. Place drape on work surface (plastic-backed) drapes should have the plastic side in contact with the nonsterile surface). Grasp adjacent corner of drape with other hand. Keep drape well away from your body and nonsterile items. Lift drape from its wrapper allowing it to unfold. Inspect drape and grasp corner that is diagonally folded with your thumb and forefinger. Open package containing sterile drape according to Skill 31-2 (Berman and Snyder). Select a clean, dry surface that is proper working height. Inspect for intactness, dryness, and expiration date. > Do not set up a sterile field ahead of time for future use.ฤก. Conscientiousness, alertness, honesty are essential qualities in sterile asepsis maintenance. > use sterile gloves or forceps to handle sterile items > the person who sees a sterile object become contaminated must correct/report the problem. Skin cannot be sterilized and is unsterile. margins at edge of drape are considered unsterile. Moisture attracts microbes The edges of a sterile field are unsterile. Liquids spilled in sterile field will be protected from seeping via barrier. > sterile moisture-proof barriers below sterile objects. Sterile objects can become unsterile by prolonged exposure to airborne microorganisms > Keep doors closed, traffic to a minimum in areas of sterile procedures (moving air -> dust w/ microbes) > Wear surgical caps, refrain from sneezing & coughing over field, & keep talking to a minimum > Refrain from reaching OVER a sterile field Fluids flow in direction of gravity > always hold forceps w/ tips below handles to prevent fluid contaminated by hands from flowing back over the tips > Surgical Hand Wash: always hold hands higher than elbows to prevent contamination from forearms from reaching hands Capillary Action: moisture that passes through a sterile object draws microorganisms from unsterile surfaces above/below to the sterile surface. Sterile objects become unsterile when touched by unsterile objects. >handle obj that will come into contact w/ open wounds or body cavities w/ sterile forceps or steile gloved hands only > Questionable sterility? assume article is unsterile. Table 31-7 All objects used in a sterile field must be sterile > Check intactness, dryness, exp date Sterile objects that are out of sight or below the waist are considered unsterile.
